Welcome.
My love of birds began when I was just a little girl. While mum was shopping I would often wait for her at the local pet shop. I had become good friends with the old couple that had owned the store ever since I could remember. They would let me help with simple little task, most likely, to keep me out of trouble.
When I was about 8 years old a man came in with a box of budgerigars. I found it very exciting to see new birds arrive, but this day would prove to be extra special. After he had taken all the sweet little baby budgies out, I realised that he still had one left, and there seemed to be, too much concerned mumblings about this last little bird.
After some time they took the little bird from the box and held it in their hands. As the breeder left they called me over and told me to hold out my hands. I was excited but scared that the little bird would fly from my grasp. They then explained the little budgie was what was known as a Walker and sometimes a Runner. He had been born without the ability to fly, he looked perfect to me, but they explained that his flight feathers never grew properly and that it just happened sometimes.
To my complete delight they told me that the little bird was mine, so long as I promised to take special care of him and as long as my mum said it was ok. That was the first feathered love of my life, and I was lucky enough to have him for a number of years. He would prove to be the starting point of a menagerie of special needs birds that I would adopt. Housing them in aviaries I made from old wooden closets. From there grew a love that has endured a life time.
I hope to use this Blog just to talk about my experiences, sightings, health care tips, pet stories and any array of subjects relating to the love of birds.
